Nov. 14th, 2010 09:57 pmFire on the left, last one standing, and Pretty much the worst winter ever are all up at AO3. Which has been suffering a bit lately from the most recent code push, or whatever. But I still like seeing whole stories on one page, so.
I posted last one standing with the 'rape/non-con' warning, even though that stuff mostly happens off-screen... better to be safe than sorry, right? I mean, better to scare people off than to inadvertently upset someone who might have known enough to avoid the story based on that warning? I guess?
On LJ I warned for 'potentially disturbing themes' here, because the way Papelbon reacts to the rape might be disturbing to some readers, even though we never see the rape 'on-screen', or even hear it really detailed. At the time I felt that warning for rape would have given an inaccurate sense of what the story was about; I was also concerned that tagging the fic as such would give some people the impression that it was a fic about rape, or where non-con was some sort of central kink, which this particular fic most definitely is not.
I also warn for 'disturbing themes' when writing stories with BDSM-type activity that has darker overtones (but is still consensual), or fic where there is an attempted assault of some kind (one that ultimately fails), or where an assault of some sort occurs off-screen. Where rape does occur on-screen, I warn for it as rape/non-con.
But the only warning options AO3 gives you are
--choose not to use warnings
--graphic depictions of violence
--major character death
--rape/non-con
--underage
--no archive warnings apply
And then they say you can use the 'additional tags' section to add other warnings if you want to. Here's my problem.
Let's take Outdated price tags and the Worst Season of All Time, for instance. There is no death in this story. There's no violence, no rape, and nobody is underage. So technically 'no archive warnings apply'.
However, on LJ I have a warning up for 'depictions of drug use', because it has Stanton and Henson using cocaine, and while I think alcohol use and maybe even marijuana use is somewhat expected in pro athlete fic, most readers going into such a fic would not reasonably expect detailed descriptions of cocaine use. That might catch someone by surprise-- and if that reader is, say, a recovering addict, it might not go over very well. So I warn for it. Better safe than sorry. But it feels kind of weird to put that in as an additional tag and not a proper warning.
Or what about something like end of message? Obviously I would warn for violence. But non-con? The sex, when it occurs, is sort of consensual. The contrast between the way Vance thinks he should be reacting, and the way he does react, is a crucial point-- different readers will read the degree of consensuality differently there, which is kind of what I wanted.
On LJ the warnings for this one are: disturbing shit, violence, hatesexy things, dubious consent, mindfuckery, bloodplay. Which I figured would be descriptive enough to let people know they should avoid it if they had reasons to avoid such things, while at the same time not reducing it to a simple declaration of 'non-con', because it wasn't simply that. It wasn't healthy or good, and the reader is certainly not supposed to believe that it's healthy or good, but that doesn't mean that Vance was not (necessarily) consenting.
I don't know. I wish there were more warning options, or a 'write your own' field in the warning section itself (not in 'additional tags') (although I assume they have it this minimal to make it easy to search and categorize in bulk?). I guess that's my only point.
